South Kashmir Residents Urge Govt to Restore Anantnag–Lal Chowk SRTC Bus Service

‘Have Called Meeting with All Concerned, Will Sort Out the Matter Very Soon’: Transport Minister Satish Sharma

Anantnag, May 21: Residents of Anantnag and adjoining areas in South Kashmir have appealed to the government for the immediate restoration of the direct State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) bus service from Anantnag to Lal Chowk, Srinagar.

The curtailment of the service, which now terminates at Pantha Chowk, has caused immense inconvenience to commuters — especially patients, students, women, and employees — who are now forced to change vehicles to reach the city centre.

A group of locals told the news agency JKNS that the direct bus route was a reliable, affordable, and safe travel option. The disruption has led to longer travel times, increased fares, and daily hardships, particularly for elderly patients who require frequent visits to hospitals in Srinagar. Students face delays in reaching colleges and universities, while women have expressed serious concerns regarding safety and comfort when switching to overcrowded local cabs.

Daily wage earners and employees said their productivity has been affected due to the additional commute time and expenses. “We are only asking for the restoration of a basic transport facility,” said one commuter.

The residents have appealed to J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Transport Minister Satish Sharma for the immediate restoration of the direct SRTC bus service from Anantnag to Lal Chowk, Srinagar.

Responding to the issue, J&K Transport Minister Satish Sharma told JKNS, “There is some issue with regard to SRTC buses and the traffic department. I have called a meeting with all concerned, and we will sort out the matter very soon.” He added that a detailed discussion with the SRTC General Manager and traffic officials will be held today to resolve the matter without further delay.
