Significant Snowfall Expected Across Jammu & Kashmir

Srinagar, Jan 28 (KF):  A fresh spell of snowfall and rain is expected to hit Jammu and Kashmir from January 28 onwards, bringing with it the possibility of disruption to travel and everyday life. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather warning for the region, urging people to be prepared for the wintry conditions.

Details of the Weather Forecast:

  • 28 – 29 January: Light to moderate rain/snow is expected across many parts of Kashmir and some areas in Jammu until the evening of January 28, with an increase in intensity by the evening/night. By the morning of January 29, most regions in Jammu and Kashmir should experience a spell of rain/snow, with the highest intensity expected in northern Kashmir. A few places in higher elevations may witness snowfall ranging from 1 to 2 feet. There’s also a chance of snowfall in plains, particularly in northern Kashmir, with the highest likelihood on the night of January 28 or early morning of January 29. Weather conditions are expected to improve from the afternoon of January 29.

  • 30 January – 1 February: Another Western Disturbance is expected to bring rain/snow starting on the morning/afternoon of January 30. This system is expected to be more intense and widespread compared to the one on January 28-29. Moderate to heavy snowfall is likely in higher elevations, with peak precipitation expected on January 31. Jammu region is expected to receive a substantial amount of rain, while its higher reaches should experience moderate to heavy snowfall. For the plains of Kashmir, especially in the north, there is an increased chance of snowfall in this upcoming Western Disturbance due to lower temperatures.

  • 3-5 February: Another Western Disturbance, associated with colder temperatures, is expected to affect from 03 Feb evening. The IMD will provide further updates on the impact of this system in the coming days.

  • Travel Advisory:

The IMD has advised people to be cautious while travelling in the affected areas during the coming days. Heavy snowfall and rain could lead to landslides and road closures. Travellers are advised to check the latest weather updates before embarking on any journey.

    Precautions to Take:

People living in the affected areas are advised to stock up on essential supplies such as food, water, and medicines. They should also ensure that their homes are properly insulated to keep out the cold. It is important to wear warm clothing and footwear when venturing outdoors.

  • Additional Information:

    • The IMD has also issued a warning for heavy rainfall in some parts of south India during the same period.
    • People in other parts of the country should also be prepared for winter weather conditions, as the cold wave is expected to continue for some time. (KF)
