Scorching Heatwave Sweeps Across J&K; MeT Predicts Relief After May 26

Srinagar, May 23: The Jammu and Kashmir region continues to reel under a severe heatwave, with temperatures soaring significantly above normal levels, according to the Meteorological Department.

Speaking to Kashmir News Service (KNS), senior meteorologist Parveen Kumar confirmed that Srinagar recorded a high of 33.5°C on May 22, while several other areas in the Kashmir division, including Qazigund, also witnessed soaring temperatures. In many hilly regions of Jammu & Kashmir, temperatures are currently 5 to 9 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.

“This heatwave is expected to persist till May 26,” said Kumar. “However, a change in weather is anticipated between May 27 and May 30, with scattered rainfall expected across 30 to 40 percent of the Union Territory. This may bring some relief from the intense heat.”

The department has issued an advisory urging residents to avoid outdoor activities between 11 am and 4 pm, the peak heat hours. “People should stay indoors as much as possible, keep themselves hydrated, and follow all health advisories to avoid heatstroke and related illnesses,” he added.

When asked about the duration of the heatwave, Kumar reiterated that the prevailing high temperatures will gradually decline after May 26 with the expected rainfall, eventually bringing relief across the region.

The Meteorological Department will continue to monitor the situation closely and issue timely updates. Residents are advised to stay alert and take all necessary precautions during this extreme weather condition. (KNS)
