Srinagar, Feb 02 (KF): Kashmir and Ladakh, are experiencing a bone-chilling cold wave with temperatures plummeting to record lows. Larnoo in Kokernag, Kashmir, recorded the most extreme temperature at a staggering -17.7°C, shattering previous records for the region. Other areas in Kashmir, including Sonamarg (-15.1°C), Pahalgam (-11.9°C), and Gulmarg (-12.0°C), are also facing unprecedented chills.
While Jammu city itself enjoys a milder 5.7°C, some locations in the Jammu region like Banihal (-6.8°C) and Bhaderwah (-5.2°C) are feeling the winter’s bite. Ladakh, known for its harsh climate, is also shivering with Leh at -9.4°C and Kargil at -11.5°C. The situation in Drass remains unclear with missing temperature data, but its high altitude suggests similar extreme cold.
Qazigund: -9.4°C, known for its scenic beauty and proximity to Pahalgam.
Kupwara: -4.4°C, located in the north of Kashmir with stunning mountain landscapes.
Anantnag: -8.5°C, a major administrative town and historical site.
Ganderbal: -3.1°C, home to famous tourist destinations like Sonamarg and Manasbal Lake.
This extreme weather event has raised concerns about the well-being of residents, particularly those in vulnerable communities. The possibility of disruptions to infrastructure and transportation also exists. Authorities are likely to issue advisories and take necessary measures to mitigate the impact of this record-breaking cold wave. (KF)
