Srinagar, June 15: Amid growing concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Iran, parents of Indian students currently studying in the country have issued an urgent appeal to the Minister for External Affairs, Dr. S. Jaishankar, and the Government of India to facilitate the immediate and safe evacuation of their children.

According to the parents, all students had already registered with the Indian Embassy in Iran as per the guidelines issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). However, the recent escalation and overnight blasts in the region have left the students traumatized and living in constant fear.

In their appeal, the parents expressed deep concern about the safety of their children and emphasized that the situation is still manageable if proactive steps are taken now. They urged the government to act swiftly, drawing parallels with earlier evacuations during the Ukraine conflict and other global crises, where timely intervention by the Indian government was widely lauded.

“We sincerely hope that the Ministry will take this request on humanitarian grounds and initiate prompt and concrete steps to ensure the safety of our children before the situation worsens further,” the letter stated.

The appeal, underscores the urgency of the matter and calls for immediate action from concerned authorities in New Delhi.

Srinagar, Jun 14: Ahead of the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra (SANJY) 2025, Assistant Regional Transport Officer (ARTO) Anantnag, Mubashir Jan, held a crucial meeting with transporters operating on the Pahalgam route to assess preparedness and enhance transportation coordination for the annual pilgrimage.

According to information accessed by JKNS, the meeting included representatives from Stand No. 1 (with approximately 500 vehicles) and Stand No. 2 (with around 630 vehicles), both responsible for the Nunwan–Chandanwari segment. ARTO Jan informed that all vehicles have been inspected and deemed fit for service, with drivers having prior experience in handling Yatra traffic.

The session emphasized the enforcement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure the safety and punctual movement of Yatra-bound vehicles. Transporters voiced concerns over outdated fares, noting that rates have remained unchanged for the past four years despite rising fuel and maintenance costs.

One of the main issues discussed was traffic bottlenecks on the narrow, hilly stretch between Nunwan Base Camp and Chandanwari. Transporters requested that authorities prevent the stoppage of private and RTC vehicles along this critical route to ensure a continuous and safe flow of Yatra vehicles.

Additionally, it was suggested that Langar (community kitchen) vehicles be directed to return promptly after unloading supplies at Chandanwari to avoid creating congestion on the narrow road.

Stressing the importance of joint operational efforts, ARTO Mubashir Jan underlined the vital roles of Traffic Police and J&K Police in maintaining an uninterrupted vehicular movement. Their coordinated involvement, he said, would help manage the route effectively, prevent unauthorized halts, and respond to emergencies swiftly.

The ARTO assured transporters that their concerns and recommendations would be conveyed to the District Administration and SANJY officials, and that appropriate steps would be taken to ensure a safe, efficient, and well-managed Yatra. (JKNS)

Anantnag, June 14: A man tragically lost his life after slipping into the Jhelum river while performing ablution (Wudu) at Batengoo in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Saturday afternoon, according to local sources.

Eyewitnesses told Kashmir First that the man accidentally fell into the river. Onlookers managed to retrieve him from the water and rushed him to GMC Anantnag. However, doctors at the hospital declared him dead on arrival.

An official from Government Medical College (GMC) Anantnag confirmed to Kashmir First that the individual was brought in without any vital signs. “Despite all resuscitation efforts, he could not be revived,” the official said, adding that the body was later sent for medico-legal post-mortem.

New Delhi, June 10: The Central Government has approved an additional ₹25 crore as compensation for houses damaged due to Pakistani shelling in the border areas of Jammu and Kashmir during Operation Sindoor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently announced extra financial help for families affected by the shelling. As a special measure, ₹2 lakh will be given for each fully damaged house and ₹1 lakh for each partially damaged one.

After PM Modi’s announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah ensured the quick release of ₹25 crore from the Ministry of Home Affairs for 2,060 affected houses, according to an official statement.

The same type of compensation will also be provided to affected families in the border areas of Punjab.

Home Minister Amit Shah had visited the Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on May 29-30. During his visit, he gave appointment letters to family members of those who lost their lives in cross-border firing.

The government had already been providing compensation to those affected by cross-border shelling. After Operation Sindoor, many incidents of shelling were reported in Jammu and Kashmir’s border districts, causing damage to homes, schools, religious places (including temples, mosques, and gurdwaras), and shops.

To handle the situation, the administration took timely steps. Around 3.25 lakh people were evacuated from the affected areas, and about 15,000 were sheltered in 397 camps with food, water, electricity, and healthcare facilities.

Additionally, 394 ambulances were deployed, including 62 in Poonch district alone, to transport patients to hospitals. The government also involved 2,818 civil defence volunteers to help with health services, fire and emergency response, livestock care, and supply of essentials.

New Delhi, Jun 4: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will on Friday inaugurate the Chenab bridge, the world’s highest railway arch bridge, and flag off Vande Bharat trains between Katra and Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir.

A PMO statement said Modi will launch multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore at Katra, the home to the Mata Vaishno Devi temple.

Lauding the Chenab bridge as an architectural marvel, the statement noted that it is at a height of 359 metres above the river. It is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch bridge engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions.

“A key impact of the bridge will be in enhancing connectivity between Jammu and Srinagar. Through Vande Bharat train moving on the bridge, it will take just about 3 hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing existing travel time by 2-3 hours,” it said, stressing Modi’s commitment to boosting infra and connectivity in the region.

The Anji Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed rail bridge that will serve the nation in a challenging terrain, it added.

Among the other projects to be launched is the 272-km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.

Constructed at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore, it includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country aiming to transform regional mobility and driving socio-economic integration.

In a major boost to last mile connectivity especially in border areas, Modi will lay the foundation stone and inaugurate various road projects.

The prime minister will also lay the foundation stone of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Katra worth over Rs 350 crore. It will be the first medical college in Reasi district contributing substantially to the healthcare infrastructure in the region, it said.

Srinagar, June 03: Lt. Governor Manoj Sinha on Tuesday sacked 3 government employees, who were working for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) & Hizb-ul-Mujahidin (HM).

Since taking office in August 2020, Manoj Sinha has prioritized weakening terrorism’s infrastructure by targeting both active terrorists and their support networks, including overground workers (OGWs) and sympathizers embedded in government institutions.

A govt spokesman in a statement said “Sinha has ensured aggressive counter-terrorism operations, with security forces neutralizing hundreds of terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir between 2020 and 2024 and termination of more than 75 OGW/Terror associates from the government jobs under Article 311(2)(c) of the Indian Constitution. He has pledged to root out terrorism and their support structures, ensuring strict action against terrorists and their aides.”

The three sacked employees, who are in jail, are: Malik Ishfaq Naseer, a police constable; Ajaz Ahmed, a teacher in the school education department; and Waseem Ahmad Khan, a Junior Assistant in Government Medical College Srinagar, reported news agency Kashmir Dot Com.

The government employees fired by the Lieutenant Governor as per the statement were actively working for the terror outfits and helping terrorists to execute terror attacks on security forces and civilians. “Having a mole and a dangerous terrorist associate in the ranks of police and other government department is a huge threat a continuation of which can be extremely expensive for the sovereignty and integrity of the nation,” the statement said.

a security official said that “Malik Ishfaq Naseer was recruited as a constable in J&K Police in 2007. His brother Malik Asif Naseer was a Pakistan-trained terrorist of LeT. He was killed by security forces during an encounter in 2018. Malik, however, continued his terror activities with impunity and being police constable he was able to evade any suspicion. His LeT link was exposed in September, 2021 when J&K police was investigating a case related to smuggling of arms and explosives in Jammu region. Malik’s despite being the police constable, who took oath to protect the integrity of India, was helping terror outfit LeT to drop arms, explosives and narcotics. These consignments were guided by GPS technology and dropped at a pre-shared coordinates facilitated by Malik to Pakistani terrorists and his handlers.”

“He was not only identifying the safe location, sharing the coordinates with LeT handlers in Pakistan but he was also collecting and distributing arms and ammunition to terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir region enabling them to carry out terrorist attacks on security forces and civilians,” A senior security official said, adding that instead of helping the police department in fighting the terror which he was mandated for, he chose to be a mole and a collaborator and betrayed his oath and uniform.

“Malik’s disloyalty towards the nation and department by becoming an accomplice and a ring leader of LeT terror outfit has wreaked colossal damage to the department, society and the nation,” the official observed.

Ajaz Ahmed, the teacher in School Education Department, was working for HM. He was recruited as a teacher in 2011. He became a trusted terror associate of HM in Poonch region. He was actively helping the terror outfit in smuggling arms, ammunition and narcotics. The terror link with HM was exposed in November 2023 when Police arrested Ajaz and his friend during a routine check. Both were carrying arms, ammunition and posters of HM in Ajaz’s Toyota Fortuner. Further investigation had revealed that consignment was received on the direction of his handler Abid Ramzan Sheikh, an HM’s terrorist in PoJK. The consignment was to be delivered to terrorists operating in Kashmir for carrying out attacks on security forces and civilians.

Investigation further revealed that Ajaz had been receiving huge consignment of arms & ammunition for past many years and delivering it to terrorists in Kashmir valley. (KDC)
